28 January 2021: Three CI²MA researchers awarded funds from Fondecyt Regular 2021
They are four year long projects
  • Rodolfo Araya and Raimund Bürger from the Universidad de Concepción, as well as Verónica Anaya, an academician from the Universidad del Bío-Bío, are leading scientific proposals that will receive funds from this state source.

Recently, the results of the Regular 2021 contest of the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development, Fondecyt, of the Research and Development Agency, ANID, were informed. This initiative seeks to finance projects of 2 to 4 years duration in scientific or technological research that lead to new knowledge or applications provided through working hypotheses made explicit in the project.

At the Center for Research in Mathematical EngineeringCI²MA, there are three researchers who were awarded funds from this state source: Rodolfo Araya and Raimund Bürger from the Universidad de Concepción, UdeC, and Verónica Anaya, from the Universidad del Bío-Bío, UBB.

“The objective of the project (Finite Element Methods for New Vorticity Formulations in Fluid Mechanics, 1211265) is to propose finite element schemes for new formulations based on vorticity for linear and non-linear problems in fluid mechanics. For example, those that allow variable viscosity and more general boundary conditions, among others. The good approach of these new formulations will be studied both at a continuous and discrete level, in addition to obtaining a priori error estimates with independent constants of the physical parameters”, explained the academician from the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences of the UBB. “During the development of the project, the participation of Master's and Doctorate students, as well as research stays and participation in national and international congresses are contemplated”, she added.

Meanwhile, Araya, Director of CI²MA, academician of the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics of the UdeC and associate researcher of the Center for Mathematical Modeling, CMM, of the Universidad de Chile, highlighted that “the awarded project (The Mixed Hybrid Multiscale method: Extensions, 1211649) has the main objective of extending new multiscale methods to problems arising from fluid mechanics, in particular to the Navier-Stokes equation, considering both the turbulent and laminar cases”.

His colleague from the same Department and Subdirector of CI²MA, Raimund Bürger, explained that “through this project (Theory, numerics, and applications for systems of conservation laws, convection-diffusion-reaction problems, andcoupled flow-transport problems, 1210610) I will continue to study convection-diffusion-reaction equations and flow and transport models coupled with various applications especially relevant to the geographic and economic reality of Chile, namely: reactive sedimentation and sewage treatment, flotation columns in the mining industry, large movements groups of pedestrians, spread of diseases, forest fires and geophysical applications”, the Municipal Prize of Sciences of Concepción 2020, and also associate researcher of the CMM sustained.
